May 18, 2006

<P>Hitwise tracks searches on "Da Vinci Code"-related websites.</P>

According to Hitwise data based on a sample of 10 million users, the website to receive the highest volume of traffic from the search term "da vinci code" was Sony Pictures website representing 12.56 percent of traffic from this term. The book's author Dan Brown and his site, www.danbrown.com, captured the second highest amount of traffic with 11.57 percent. Trailing Dan Brown's site was the Wikipedia site with 7.05 percent and the Christianity Today site with 6.04 percent. Google was the most popular search engine used when searching for the term "da vinci code" as Sony and Google partnered together for a promotion of this week's release of the Da Vinci Code movie. The success of cross media promotion using search is evidenced by looking at Hitwise Clickstream data where we can determine that the strong increase in market share of visits to Sonypictures.com was driven by Google, which provided over 30 percent of the websites traffic for the week ending May 6th. The Clickstream chart below shows the historical upstream percentage of traffic from Google to Sonypictures.com, demonstrating the increase from 3 to 30 percent in just over three weeks.
