This year's U.S. mid-term elections shed light on the increasing role of the internet in politics. Political sites have helped mobilize voters, encourage political activism, raise campaign funds and even influence the news cycle. A look at the profile of visitors to the Politics category in September 2006 reveals who they are and what other interests they exhibit online.
- Visitors to the Politics category in September 2006 were 155 percent more likely than average to visit both the Genealogy and Religion categories. They were also more than twice as likely as the average internet user to visit the Entertainment – News, Online Trading, Pharmacy, Gay/Lesbian and Humor categories.
- The likelihood of visiting Political sites increases steadily with age. While those aged 12 to 17 were 46 percent less likely than average to visit the Politics category, those aged 65 and older were 72 percent more likely to do so. In more general terms, those aged 35 and older were more likely than average to visit Political sites, while younger demographics showed below average skews.
- Visitation to the Politics category showed relative parity across most demographic regions. Visitors from the East South Central region were 32 percent less likely than average to visit, while those from the Mid-Atlantic region were 12 percent more likely. All other regions indexed near the mean.
