1996 vs. 2006: The Web Then and Now

From the ad:tech New York keynote presentation, "1996 vs. 2006: The Web Then and Now" with ShopWiki's Kevin Ryan.

As the buzzwords of the new internet age (wiki, podcast, blog) drift toward the mainstream, we're reminded how far the space has evolved in only 10 years. PointCast, portals and pop-ups may have been the talk of the late '90s, but in 2006 they sound like artifacts from a googol years past. More than simply the jargon has changed; the web's business models have also transformed: Users rather than publishers are the web's newest protagonists and keywords and clickthroughs have replaced page views as the markers of success.

Few have had as privileged a view of the last decade's changes as Kevin P. Ryan. From 1996 to 2005, Ryan took the helm of a just-launched ad-serving company and helped make DoubleClick synonymous with online advertising. Now Ryan returns to the start-up process as CEO and co-founder of a recently launched Web 2.0 company, the shopping search engine ShopWiki. Ryan will share his insights on the 2006 environment, compare it to the 1996 world he knew, and look to the way we may be talking about this age's revolutionary medium in 2016. You'll learn what opportunities he sees for publishers, agencies and marketing professionals in this Web 2.0-world.

Drew Ianni, chairman of programming for ad:tech expositions, introduced Mr. Ryan.
