As rumors circulate that Microsoft is in preliminary talks to invest in Facebook, The New York Post is reporting that the software giant may be making noise in part to spite Yahoo!, which has also been rumored as a possible partner for Microsoft.
According to the story in The New York Post, officials at Microsoft have been debating the merits of going public with a Yahoo takeover proposal from earlier this year. An unnamed source told the paper that Microsoft may unveil the plan in an effort to create dissent among shareholders to force a sale.
Neither Yahoo nor Microsoft has gone on the record about a possible deal. But that hasn't stopped speculation that the two might ultimately unite against a common rival: Google. Just a few weeks ago, rumors of a deal between Yahoo and Microsoft once again surfaced.
