Paramount sets films free on Facebook

Want to send a friend a clip of your favorite movie? Well, if it's a Paramount Pictures film, the chances are good that you can do so with a new Facebook application designed by FanRocket.

Known as VooZoo, the application marks a first for Hollywood studios, which have traditionally been reluctant to give users free access to content. Users won't have access to the full films, but they will be able to cherry pick famous clips from movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Forrest Gump."

"The short clips for a movie that you've already seen before helps you relive the moment," Paramount SVP of entertainment Derek Broes told The Associated Press.

It's that sense of nostalgia that Paramount hopes will prompt users to become buyers by clicking on a special button that appears at the end of each clip. Paramount also is planning to use the application as a way to market new films such as the fourth installment of the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

But for now, Broes said the studio's benchmark for success won't be total sales of DVDs or movies tickets.

"My benchmark for success is that people are joining and sending," Broes said.
