Social Media for Social Change
Raising money through Twitter
Still skeptical about Twitter? Many are. But what if you could leverage your extended friends and the Twitter network to create buzz without spending any money? Gradon Tripp, the founder of Social Media for Social Change (SM4SC), did.

Without a plan, and using the social capabilities of Twitter, Tripp started soliciting input on an event designed to generate money for a nonprofit. First his friends started commenting, which led others to become aware of the idea. A few key people -- some of whom he had never met -- became enthusiastic supporters and promoters. This led to obtaining sponsors.
Ultimately the event raised more than $20,000 for Jane Doe Inc. The organization now has commitments to continue the series, with the next one being in New York.
Why SM4SC's approach was successful:
- Enlisted a few key people to help spread the word
- Created an emotional appeal
- Realized that Twitter is great for promoting and talking about events
- Allowed the passionate group to participate, creating ownership of the idea
