Introduction
It's been about a year and a half since I first reviewed websites that could significantly improve their communications with their audiences through desktop applications. Since then, the landscape has changed quite a bit. Even the terminology has shifted, with "branded desktop application" being largely supplanted by "desktop widget."
"Widget" as a word has come to symbolize the portable nature of computing. They are the small bits of software that can be installed on many different channels to connect with people wherever they are most useful to them.
What's most surprising is how brands continue to miss the opportunities afforded to them in the desktop space, which is a viable channel on which brands can engage without incurring the ongoing costs associated with typical marketing funnel investments. With that, we begin a new chapter of looking at a few sites that could open up fresh new ways of communicating and building revenue on the most highly coveted space: the desktop. Could your brand benefit by exploring similar opportunities?
