Sinkhole 5
Sorry, but I'll have to get back to you after my two-week vacation.
We're in an industry where most of us lack work-life balance. I don't think I've ever met so many people in an industry where being a workaholic is the norm, and people's passion for what they do is through the roof. I freely admit that I'm in this category.
That said, when one of our account reps goes on vacation, I applaud them! I know that their batteries are going to be completely recharged when they get back. I also know that business may not run on autopilot while they are out.
It's OK for the point person to be out of the office, but it's not OK to leave without a back-up contact. When you get back from vacation, you want your clients asking you about your vacation, not yelling at you because their campaigns went in the crapper while you were on the beach washing down your margarita with a Mai Tai.
It sounds like common sense, but there have been a handful of times when I have had nowhere to turn while my rep is on vacation. Take the time to line up one or two contact points while you're out. Go the extra step and set up an introductory call if your client doesn't regularly work with your backups. This careful planning will make everyone's lives much easier and reduce your client's stress and anxiety the next time you take a well-deserved break.
