Google search trends follow economic roller coaster

As the economy continues to sputter like an engine out of fuel, Google is seeing a search spike on terms related to the economy, Fortune reports.

Queries for terms like "investments" closely mirror the performance of the stock market.

"The broader issue and the broader trends that we're seeing are that the financial landscape is really, really complicated," Jon Kaplan, Google's financial services industry director, told Fortune. "The complexity of the financial situation right now is causing people to search more, and we see that."

The way we search says a lot about us.

"The search engine is supplanting content sites in many ways," Shar VanBoskirk, told Fortune. "People are starting any decision they make with a search."
