For all the growth Facebook has experienced over the last few years, there was always one simple feature that MySpace did better: vanity URLs. Well, the social media giant is finally doing something about that -- customized URLs for member profiles will be available at the stroke of midnight (Eastern Time) this Saturday, CNET reports.
User profile URLs are currently a hodgepodge of numbers that indicate absolutely nothing about who the member is. The change is likely to be incredibly popular with Facebook users, including brands, who would like to create a permanent, SEO-friendly URL to call home.
The change doesn't appear to be mandatory, according to CNET, but users won't get any second chances -- once they pick a URL, they won't be able to change or transfer it. Moreover, the feature won't be immediately available to users that signed up for a Facebook page after May 31, in an effort to prevent abuse and name squatting.
