Google's secret Bing anxieties

Microsoft's new search engine Bing appears to be keeping Google's co-founder Sergey Brin up at night. According to the New York Post, sources have disclosed that Brin considers Bing enough of a threat to order urgent upgrades to Google's web services. Brin, who otherwise rarely interferes in the day-to-day operations of his company, is also allegedly leading a team of engineers to investigate the search algorithms used by Bing.

Should Google be worried? Bing has increased Microsoft's market share by two percentage points, to 11 percent, but that still puts it significantly behind Google. At the end of the day, ease of use and force of habit -- not superior engineering -- are much more likely to dictate which service people prefer, according to Google expert Scott Kessler. With Google being so ubiquitous in our daily lives, it would be extremely difficult for Bing to dislodge the search behemoth.
