Online ad practices under fire on Capitol Hill

Lawmakers blasted internet companies on Capitol Hill for the seemingly low level of protection they place on information collected about consumers, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Members of the House Internet subcommittee focused particularly on the information collected for advertising purposes.

"I think it's a big deal if someone tracks where you go and what you look at without your personal approval. We wouldn't like that in the non-internet world and I personally don't like it in the internet world," Rep. Joe Barton (R., Texas) said, according to the Journal.

Lawmakers are currently drafting online-privacy legislation to give consumers more information about the information being collected and give them greater control over how that data can be used, the Journal added.
