The number of moms using social media and networking sites has grown from 11 percent to a whopping 63 percent in just three years, according to MediaWeek. These statistics are part of the findings of a research study carried out by BabyCenter, which aggregated several surveys conducted over the past six months.
What is most striking about these results is the extent to which social media has replaced traditional media consumption -- particularly print media -- by new and younger moms. Tina Sharkey, the chairman and global president of BabyCenter, predicts the number of moms using social media will overtake those using only newspapers within a few years. Magazine readership has dropped significantly among this demographic as well. Forty-nine percent of survey respondents reported reading magazines less after becoming moms, while 46 percent spend less time with newspapers.
