ABC has created a new social tool for viewers who use online streaming videos. The new tool will allow viewers to add commentary in a sidebar next to the video creating an interactive environment, according to Mediaweek. The program will launch this weekend, to coincide with the network's online debut of "V", a remake of the 80s science-fiction hit.
Viewers can log in via Facebook and are encouraged to share comments about certain scenes, or share them with friends to create an on-demand experience. Executives at ABC see Social as a differentiator in an increasingly cluttered online video landscape, according to Alexis Rapo, vp, digital media, ABC Entertainment. "This definitely allows us to engage with a deeper, broader audience," she said, comparing the experience to the "DVD extras" model. The "V" ABC Social page will include commentary from the show's executive producers, and ABC hopes to include actors, writers, and directors from shows in the future.
