Visitor's to MySpace's homepage this weekend will be greeted by several pale, frail faces and a howling hairy beast. But these aren't pictures of MySpace members who spend all their time online and rarely see the sunlight; they're characters from the new film "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which is taking over MySpace's homepage.
The intrusive full-page ad features an animated werewolf that jumps through the screen, an embedded trailer for the expected blockbuster, and the ability to buy tickets. It's the first advertisement of its kind for MySpace, according to Adweek.
Right now, MySpace can probably relate to the ostracized vampire characters of the "Twilight" movies. The News Corp.-owned social network is publicly struggling to maintain a foothold with consumers, and its traffic has been in freefall since last year. The site is now refocusing as an entertainment hub, trying to focus on what consumers are into, rather than what they are up to, which is the domain of Facebook and Twitter.
