Hulu simplifies scene search

The newest feature rolled out by Hulu Labs -- the popular video site's experimental features platform -- should make it easier for viewers to find their favorite scenes in TV shows like "Glee," "Lost," and "The Office."

The company's new Captions Search option allows users to search for keywords within the text and transcript of videos on the site that have been closed captioned, according to TechCrunch.

By accessing the Caption Search tab on an enabled Hulu video, viewers can identify which episode and specific scene of a show features the keywords they selected. For a quick preview of the search result, users can hover their mouse cursors over the image displays to see a short segment of video play in the thumbnail.

According to Eugene Wai, Hulu's VP of product, on the Hulu blog, Caption Search also has a bonus feature: a visual graph of user interest through the span of a captioned video. Called the heat map, this feature can be used as a navigational tool (used to jump to a particular captioned section in the video), or to find particularly popular segments within a video.
