Consumers worldwide will access the web from their mobile phones more often than they will from their PCs by 2013, according to a MediaPost report. Research firm Gartner forecasts that there will be 1.82 billion smartphones and internet-equipped handsets in use around the world in three years, more than the estimated 1.78 billion PCs that will be in use.
The rise in mobile internet usage will lead to new web surfing behavior, according to the firm. Consumers expect to use fewer clicks when browsing the internet from a mobile device, so publishers will need mobile-optimized websites to remain relevant in consumers' eyes.
By the following year, 2014, Gartner predicts that 3 billion consumers around the world will be making monetary transactions from their mobile phones.
