The National Football League has named Verizon as its new wireless sponsor, reports ClickZ.
Through the deal, the league will gain access to Verizon's 91 million customers, nearly doubling the audience it had with Sprint's 48 million customers. The league's relationship with Sprint comes to an end after a five-year run.
The four-year deal with Verizon becomes effective on April 1. The real kickoff, however, will come on April 22, when the league holds its draft at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Verizon customers will be able to stream the event live on their mobile devices, and they will also have around-the-clock access to content from the league-owned cable/satellite network. Sunday and Thursday night games will be available for streaming as well.
Recently, the NFL has been exploring its options in various facets of the interactive field. On Monday, it announced a partnership with Hulu, through which the league will provide content from NFL Films to the video service.
