Bing draws in new fans at rivals' expense

Bing, the Microsoft-owned search engine, is slowly gaining ground on its competitors.

Hitwise says that Bing claimed a 9.7 percent share of searches in February, a slight rise from the 9.37 percent it had in January. Meanwhile, data from comScore reports that Bing had an 11.5 percent share last month, an increase from the 11.3 percent it had in the prior month. The reports, however, don't agree on which rival search engine lost users to Bing.

Hitwise suggests that Google took the punch, with the search giant's numbers falling from 71.95 percent to 70.49 percent. comScore, on the other hand, shows that Yahoo dropped from 17 to 16.8 percent.

Microsoft has been making a big advertising push for Bing, reports The Wall Street Journal. However, while some analysts believe that the aggressive marketing has been fruitful, detractors say that Bing is merely "buying" the gains, thus making its success a temporary one.
