Website design: 12 sites dissected

Going beyond "pretty"

There's an old wives' tale in website design. It goes something like this: Customer wants to make a purchase. Customer visits company's website, credit card in hand, ready to buy, buy, buy. But customer gets frustrated -- he can't find what he's looking for and the checkout procedure is long and complicated. Customer gets so frustrated he clicks off of the company's site and on to a competitor's, where he completes the purchase. It's a scary tale -- one we all try to avoid. But are we really doing all we can?

Wives' tale or not, there is one universally recognized truth: In website design, "pretty" simply doesn't cut it.

Let that sink in for a minute. Then, check out the following 12 case studies, based on a recent study by Oneupweb, to find out how your website design could be causing or costing you sales.

Great article, Lisa! However, please note that in a couple of places, VisualPak's URL is incorrect.

The first 3 examples you shared in this article are for small businesses. Would like to see input on larger branded sites for consumer brands.
