Pinterest: The latest social-media fad, or a fast-growing, increasingly relevant platform for marketers? In today's data-overload world, content curation services are increasingly vital to help us sift and sort the wealth of information available to us. Pinterest is undoubtedly one of the most interesting. The content being posted is incredible -- rich and full of fascinating data.
So, who else is using the platform? The UK has a long way to go before it matches the US for users, with 200,000 versus 12 million unique users according to Visual.Ly's excellent infographic
. The data also provides some very useful insight for marketers into the current user base, for example UK's male leaning, an older demographic and higher earning bracket - and a markedly business-orientated range of interests. From an EU perspective, despite its English language prevalence, Comscore
has found healthy traffic growth and engagement from Germany, Spain, Italy and France too.
In some ways, Pinterest's current growth reminds me of the way that the web evolved last century, with a wealth of B2C properties emerging in the US while in the UK, the B2B markets drove initial growth. As with the web itself, Pinterest is likely to evolve in both directions, in both markets, and meet in the middle, probably later on this year. So, if you work in digital marketing and you don't live under a rock, you've probably heard some noise around the latest social media darling Pinterest
. I like to think of it as Tumblr for adults (much fewer hipsters and boobie pics), but that's probably a cynical over-simplification considering that Pinterest:
- reached 10 million U.S. monthly uniques faster than any standalone site ever (comScore via TechCrunch)
- is already in the top 10 social most visited social networks (Experian Hitwise via Mashable)
- and has shown capable of driving more referral traffic than Google Plus, LinkedIn and YouTube combined (via shareaholic)
Of course, growth doesn't always entail being usefulness. So what exactly is the real marketing value of Pinterest?
Targeting users by interest
To go beyond the buzz and broohaha of big numbers, what sets this (still female dominated) social network apart is that it's interest driven. In other words, it's getting social commerce right where Facebook got it wrong:
Facebook wrongly combines the social graph with the interest graph, assuming that if your friends like it you will, too. Facebook is organised around the social graph first, whereas Pinterest is focused on the interest graph. Sure, your Facebook friends are probably all on Pinterest, but the true focus of Pinterest is not social. It's interest. Users organise around interests, making Pinterest a natural space for shopping.
What's more is that Pinterest's interest focus means that it's not bogged down by many of the privacy & access hurdles that Facebook marketers face. As Lauren Van Grouw of Confections by Shara's Paperie was quoted as saying:
"Most platforms require a friendship or acceptance to be in place before your content can be viewed. However, with Pinterest, you are able to reach a larger audience than ever imaginable."

Of course, anything that sounds too good to be true probably is, and there are a few catches for would-be Pinterest marketers. For starters, Pinterest doesn't offer branded pages the way Facebook or Twitter does. More importantly, though, the social network has rules against blatant corporate promotion.
So how can your business leverage this channel to raise brand awareness, promote products, and (possibly) generate sales? Well, if you want the bullsh*t social media evangelist answer it's: by using it the way it's supposed to be used, contributing to the community and building relationships with other users so that they take an interest in your brand, products and services.
But if you want some actual bearings and focus on what exactly you're supposed to do with Pinterest and how you're supposed to do it, you should try the following steps to see if Pinterest is something that can work for your business and in your industry.
1. Set-up your Pinterest and use it
Okay, the first thing you're going to need is a Pinterest profile. When you register it, you'll also want to link it to your brand's Twitter account and upload a branded profile pic.
Part of the sign-up process will be that you can automatically follow a whole bunch of strangers that have the same "interests" as you/your brand (remember "interest targeting"?). Do this, too.
2. Create relevant boards for your pins
Now, you understand your industry and business. You know that there are products and/or services that fall into different categories. Well, you'll need to create a bunch of "boards" around these.
A board is where you are going to share your pins. You have to assign them to one of Pinterest's own categories, but you can call them whatever you want. As Pinterest explains:
A board is a set of pins. A board can be created on any topic, such as Cool Posters, Recipes For Dinner, or Wishlist. You can add as many pins to a board as you want. For example, if you're a woman's fashion accessory retailer, you might create boards for:
Basically, if you want to engage users who are "interested" in what you sell, you should be sharing content within those interests.
3. Pin third party content
Rushing into any social ecosystem and talking about what you sell right off the bat isn't going to make you very popular. So don't do it.
Instead, start commenting on and "repinning" things that are being "pinned" by the people you're following (always adding it to the appropriate board). This will demonstrate that you're actually interested in the same things, and help users take notice of you. Who knows, they might even follow you back.
As Jason Falls suggests on Entrepreneur.com:
"If you're a brick-and-mortar store, pin shots of the interesting sites and people around your neighborhood and photos you take at community events. You also can search through Pinterest's categories and add some inspirational, funny or beautiful images you find."

4. Expand Your Pinterest Reach
As your boards start to fill out, find other users with relevant interests to follow. And be sure to repin and/or comment on whatever it is that they're pinning.
You can find new users to follow by filtering your feed to show pins that according to whatever Pinterest category they've been lumped into. And when you find a pin you want to repin, you can repin, comment, and follow its user all from the same window.
5. Create Branded Boards
Now that you actually have a bit of a follow and some content, it's time to actually mention your own stuff. But you want to do it in a way that's both targeted and non-spammy, so you're going to create boards just for your branded content.
The cool thing about this is that regardless of what you call your board or what it's for, you still have to allot it to one of Pinterest's global categories, so people who are interested in that Pinterest category are going to see it.
But don't go just dumping your entire inventory onto Pinterest. That'll just spam your feed and upset your followers. Rather, add your branded content in a measured, scheduled manner where it's interspersed with third party pins.
Also, in addition to your actual products, or if you don't actually have "products" per se, you might create boards that pertain to some of the different valued sectors/divisions/departments within your organisation.
6. Experiment with Pinterest Contests
One of the funnest, most engaging ways to build buzz around your brand on any social network is through contests. And as Mashable points out, there is no shortage of contest ideas that can work well on Pinterest: Brands and companies can connect and build buzz among their audiences by hosting various types of contests on Pinterest. Contests can range from creating the "best board" to a earning the most Repins. Users could post photos of the best outfits they put together or of sculptures built from products bought at a specific store. Similar to photo contests on Facebook or Twitter, Pinterest offers a way for brands to build visually stunning interaction between themselves and their patrons. So use what you know about your industry, its target market, and the users you've been engaging with on Pinterest, and devise some kind of giveaway that you think will resonate with them. It can be a great way to engage existing followers and attract quite a few more.
7. Develop Pinterest Specific Content Credit: ZDNet
Okay, so you're probably catching on by now that Pinterest is a visually driven ecosystem. So don't just sit there waiting for you product line or service offer to adapt.
Consider what you might be able to do with creatives such as:
- Branded memes
- Vintage ads
- Funny or suggest product uses
Each of these represents an opportunity to lend you products or services and added visual flare. So try to think what kind of branded creative might resonate with you ideal customer, and put your design or ad agency on spinning it into pixelated reality.
8. Introduce New Products
As your Pinterest following continues to grow, you might explore more publicity approach to product promotion by launching new product on Pinterest or soliciting feedback from the community about those new products. As Mashable also notes, Pinterest can not only be used to help you publicize new products, but to collect some market data, as well:
Because of Pinterest's commenting ability, it's an ideal platform on which to introduce a new product and gather firsthand opinions. Because Pinterest's popularity hasn't reached the caliber of Facebook, brand managers can easily organise, analyze and determine sentiment from the results. As users Repin a photo, brand managers can gather more intelligence, and ultimately decide whether their companies should move forward with mass production. Think of it as a social media focus group.
Of course, if you're going to attempt this, make sure that your product imagery is stunning or interesting or eye-catching in some way or another. After all, Pinterest is a visually based ecosystem, so if something as sensitive as a product launch or product feedback is going to be attempted, the creatives should reflect the community ethos.
9. Integrate with Facebook
If your brand pushes that content that is particularly compatible with Pinterest (e.g. you retail aesthetically distinguished goods such as jewelry or designer fashions), you might consider stepping it up with an all out Facebook Page integration. As TechCrunch notes, integrating Pinterest tabs into your Facebook Page can help you better engage your already established Facebook Fans:
Images are more effective than text at encouraging engagement, and an effective technology platform will allow you to surface visually appealing content on one or more Facebook Tabs. This content can be presented as a simple pinboard, as part of a game, or even in the News Feed. But as you pursue this, don't forget that over 40% of Facebook's traffic comes from mobile devices. Make sure your platform can effectively surface tabs on mobile devices.
In doing this, your brand not only stands to boost its Pinterest follower count, but edge its Pinterest content closer to viral. After all, if a user engages your brand on both Facebook and Pinterest, they will be that much more likely to repin your content on a regular basis.
10. Wash, pin, and repin
As you continue to pin, engage, and experiment on Pinterest, don't lose sight of the core principles of community management. Namely, share more third party content than branded content (and 80/20 split is advisable).
And don't neglect your followers. Always make sure to comment on and repin what they're pinning. Doing so will demonstrate that your brand is actually engaged in the community and contributing to the Pinterest experience, and that, in turn, will keep those users engage with your brand and contributing to its online/Pinterest presence.
