Google puts it simply: "Real help from real people in real time." The company that has given us a search engine, self-driving cars, and smart glasses now offers Helpouts. Instead of watching a how-to video on YouTube, you can interact with and receive advice via video chat. You just search for a topic and sign up for a Helpouts session. Some Helpouts are free, while others charge per minute -- with 20 percent of the fee going to Google.
To provide the brainpower behind Helpouts, Google has gathered more than 1,000 experts in the fields of arts and music, computers and electronics, cooking, education and careers, fashion and beauty, fitness and nutrition, health, and home and garden. These folks aren't just the average Joes who have a few hundred views on YouTube. They're individuals with advanced degrees, hobbyists, self-taught careerists, and other gurus. And brands are getting involved as well via brand-sponsored experts.

Especially for certain business sectors, this type of online network seems like it could drive some good sales, help consumers gain brand recognition and also truly be useful to the consumer. Hi Jasmine, thanks for your thoughts! I think that apps like Jelly will be a supplement to Google Helpouts. Some marketing experts thought that Twitter would take away from Facebook branding, and that Instagram would take away from Twitter branding, and so on. But these social media platforms prove that more really is merrier for consumers – they enjoy interacting with brands in multiple ways. It won't be long before Jelly is as popular as Snapchat and Twitter and Google Helpouts are as popular as "how-to” YouTube videos. I look forward to hearing about your experience with Helpouts! As a Digital Marketing consultant, I see use of this emerging platform as an incredible opportunity for consultants and other educators (in many fields) use this as branding and revenue-driving source. I wonder if this is a competitor or possibly a supplement to Apps like Jelly, recently announced by Biz Stone, former co-founder of Twitter? What do you think? I have found that YouTube and Google Hangouts are now staple items in many of my Social Media Marketing Plans for my B2B clients.
