Ignacio Gonzalez is the GM for Shell Eco-marathon Americas. Shell Eco-marathon is a global program hosted by Shell that challenges high school and college students to design, build, and test the most energy-efficient vehicles. With annual events in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, this innovation competition pushes future scientists and engineers to travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. Gonzalez is responsible for integrating communications, social investment, and recruitment strategies to grow the Americas competition and enhance its value for participants and Shell.
Gonzalez's full-time role at Shell is as senior communications advisor for Deepwater in the Americas. In this role, he develops reputation management strategy for Shell's offshore oil and gas business in the Americas and directs a variety of communications approaches aimed at media, government, thought leaders, communities, and environmental advocates. Gonzalez is also responsible for crisis and incident response preparedness for Shell's U.S. Gulf of Mexico operations.
Prior to his current role, Gonzalez served as stakeholder engagement advisor for Shell Oil Company, the U.S. corporate arm of Royal Dutch Shell. In this role, he led corporate thought-leadership efforts to build stakeholder relationships and brand reputation by showcasing innovative Shell business and thought leaders through integrated communications. He also led stakeholder mapping and advised Shell businesses, including upstream, downstream, and renewables, on stakeholder engagement communications strategy and planning.
Gonzalez also contributed communications expertise for Shell's "A National Dialogue on Energy Security," an 18-month, 50-city, face-to-face tour led by the U.S. head of Shell to improve understanding of energy issues among business and community leaders. The campaign shaped a new thought-leadership approach and methodology for how energy companies connect with the public, and set a benchmark for thought-leadership efforts.
Previously, Gonzalez was senior account executive with Vollmer Public Relations, one of the largest independent public relations agencies in the U.S., recently acquired by Edelman. He has accumulated more than 15 years of experience in communications, public relations, corporate social responsibility, and marketing for energy, consumer, business-to-business, non-profit, and public affairs/advocacy sectors.
Gonzalez has a B.A. in Government and History from The University of Texas at Austin. He serves as liaison for Shell's partnership with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), and gives time and expertise mentoring and guiding Latino youth through Shell's support of NCLR's Escalera program.
