MySpace Reaches the Top of Site Ranking
MySpace.com reached a new level of popularity the week ending July 8 as its www.myspace.com domain became the number one ranked URL in the United States based on market share of visits, according to internet measurement company Hitwise.

In its bid for the top, www.myspace.com accumulated 4.46 percent of the weekly market share of website visits, eclipsing second place mail.yahoo.com's total of 4.42 percent. Also, among social networking websites in the month of June, MySpace dominated all competition with 79.97 percent of the monthly market share of visits. The website's closest competitor was Facebook.com with 7.58 percent.

Cumulatively, www.myspace.com and mail.myspace.com had 7.31 percent of weekly marketshare, while www.yahoo.com and mail.yahoo.com had a cumulative total of 8.67 percent; Yahoo's search offering enjoyed an additional 1.36 percent of weekly traffic, according to Hitwise.

The industry still seems in awe of the exponential rise of MySpace, and to Bill Tancer, general manager of Hitwise, the site is proving to be an example of the extraordinary capabilities of an expanding site: "We are still discovering the internet laws of gravity as it relates to a site's potential to grow on the internet. The fact that MySpace was virtually unknown by the mainstream internet users two years ago and now claims the top position, demonstrates how hyper-competitive the internet really is."
