Google, MTV Create Video AdSense Deal

Google Inc. announced it has partnered with Viacom's MTV Networks to test the insertion of video clips into Google's targeted advertising system, AdSense.

MTV Networks has agreed to let Google AdSense use clips from MTV Network shows such as "SpongeBob," "Laguna Beach: The Real O.C." and "The MTV Video Music Awards." Ad revenues are split between the two companies and websites chosen to carry the video clips, which run about 2 to 4 minutes.

Google reported that AdSense, which is primarily a text and image-based ad system, brought $2.7 billion in revenue last year. The alliance and testing of video clips on AdSense could mean that Google will be teaming up with more video content providers in the future.

MTV has also agreed to put full-length episodes of its shows on Google and sell them for $1.99 each. MTV has a similar deal with Apple's iTunes.

"We're excited to work with MTV Networks on new ways of distributing its content to consumers via the internet and on Google Video," said Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO. "With the combination of our video technology, and extensive advertiser and publisher network, Google is in a leading position to help content owners, web publishers and advertisers generate interest and increase revenue opportunities."
