YouTube Cuts Deal with NHL

YouTube, which was recently purchased by Google for $1.65 billion, has signed its first major sports deal with the National Hockey League (NHL) to show clips of NHL games.

The partnership allows the popular video-sharing site to show video highlights of NHL regular season games within 24 hours of the original broadcast. The two companies will share revenue and help remove illegally posted NHL clips on YouTube.

The service will be available later this month and the NHL will also have a sponsored web channel on the YouTube site.

Last month Reuters reported that Google and YouTube were facing copyright challenges.

The NHL partnership may shed light onto a possible video content strategy from Google, namely that it will be partnering with more video content providers from sports leagues to media companies.
