AOL Headquarters Fires 450 Workers

America Online, Inc. announced it has laid off about 450 workers at the Dulles headquarters of AOL.

In November, AOL named Ronald E. Grant as president and its firebrand blogger, Jason Calacanis, resigned as the GM of AOL's Netscape division. The recent changes at AOL are reflective of the company's restructuring.

In September, AOL announced plans that it will reorganize its business divisions to boost internet advertising sales globally.

"In August, we were making a preliminary estimate based on very early information about how the company's new strategy would affect our structure," says Andrew Weinstein, a spokesman for the company. "When we worked through the implications of the new structure, we found there were fewer jobs on the Virginia campus that were impacted than expected."
