In an effort to target teens for the upcoming release of "The Messengers," Sony has created a downloadable ringtone only teens can hear.
The high pitched tone is inaudible for adults over 25, and is meant to tie-in thematic references to the movie. "The fact that only kids can hear it winds up being a thematic fit with the notion in the film that her parents don't believe her," says Joe Epstein, executive director, worldwide digital marketing strategy, Columbia TriStar Marketing Group.
The ringtone itself, which can be purchased for $2.49 at the movie's site, was created specifically for the film and is a combination of several ultrasonic frequencies tied together to mimic a musical sound recognizable from the film resembling a high pitched chord, reported Carly Mayberry from the Hollywood Reporter.
The ringtone is one of many interactive tools Sony is using to market the film. There are talks of creating a diary on Xanga, as well as giving the main character AIM capabilities, and providing a toll-free number that will update interested parties to her developing situation.
The horror/thriller is set to be released in theaters February 2.
