Ford Motor Co. and Microsoft Corp. are planning to deliver more wireless connectivity into a car's cockpit, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The auto maker plans to unveil a hands-free Bluetooth wireless systems and in-vehicle operating system by Microsoft.
The system, which is dubbed Sync, will allow hands-free cellphone communication and other options like receiving email and downloading music.
Ford plans to make auto jacks for Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod digital music players in more of its vehicles.
The Ford Microsoft deal may help boost Microsoft's presence in the auto industry.
"Beyond being an automotive or technology issue, this is a connectivity issue that opens the doors to a new frontier of communication and media. Marketers are starting to realize the power in being flexible-- in reaching consumers wherever they are, in a non-intrusive way. Well, how better to reach them than in a place where they spend potentially hours a day, and have never before been able to remain safely and reliably tapped in to their worlds?" says Jodi Harris, editor of Driving Interactive, iMedia's weekly automotive newsletter.
