Newspapers Team Up to Sell Online Ads

Gannett Co., McClatchy Co. and Tribune Co. are teaming up to sell advertising jointly on their newspapers' websites, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The nation's three largest newspapers wish to attract big advertisers through a one-stop shopping stop for online display ads. The joint effort is code-named "Open Network."

The Journal reports that the companies are likely to each contribute 10 percent of their online advertising space to the network. The deal has yet to be officially launched but it is speculated, if things go smoothly, the partnered newspapers will make an announcement early this year.

"Traditionally print newspaper companies have not worked well together to sell national ads in print," Jack Williams, president of Gannett Digital, told the Journal. "We intend to sell internet advertising differently."

In November Yahoo! Inc. announced a partnership with more than 150 daily U.S. newspapers to deliver search, graphical and classified advertising.
