"American Idol" Site-- a Hit on Its Own

Television's No. 1 show for the past three seasons hit an all new high note, as the official website for "American Idol" doubled its visits since last year's season premiere. The exponential increase in visitors to Americanidol.com mirrors the show's record-breaking season six premiere, which ranked highest in total viewers and ratings among the 18 to 49 demographic.

Although "American Idol" has broken plenty of ground as one of the first television series to incorporate fan voting into the outcome of the show, its Americanidol.com site has become an entertainment destination in its own right, serving as a popular fan community hub. This community, powered by MyIdol.com, gives Idol-worshippers a place to gather, create profiles, share blogs, play games and discuss the progress of their favorite Idol contestants.

"Our goal has always been to make Americanidol.com the go-to site for millions and millions of American Idol fans-- extending the Idol experience into a 24/7 environment," says Jeff King, vice president of Fox Interactive Media and general manager of Americanidol.com.

Contributing to the traffic milestone is a host of new features introduced this season. The site now includes a music download store, where fans can purchase songs by previous "American Idol" contestants. In addition, MyIdol community members can now contribute recaps of each episode, one of which will be selected after each episode as the official recap read by millions of visitors each week.

"As the show evolves, so does the site, and every year we work with FIM to develop the best in-depth content and interactive applications to help extend the TV viewing experience for its loyal fan base," says David Luner, SVP interactive and consumer products, FremantleMedia Enterprises, North America.
