Video of NFL players online will become somewhat scarce thanks to a new policy announced by the league, which said it would limit news organizations to 45 seconds per day of internet video in a move to protect the online operations of its 32 teams.
The policy shift highlights growing competition online between media outlets and teams for traffic and ultimately ad dollars generated as a result of the sport's popularity.
According to a report in the Washington Post, the Washington Redskins have used a similar policy for several years, barring video from its practices and facilities.
"There are a number of reasons for [barring videographers], but it's basically a content issue," Redskins spokesman Chris Helein told the Washington Post. "I won't hide the fact that the NFL and everything that surrounds it is valuable content [that enhances a team's website]."
