Grouper Quits YouTube Biz

Sony Corp. has pulled the plug on Grouper, its user-generated video site, choosing instead to focus on creating a destination for young talent to feed Sony film and TV studios, according to an Associated Press report.

Sony, which bought Grouper last year for $65 million, has dubbed the new virtual talent agency Crackle.

Grouper founder Josh Felser cited stiff competition, legal concerns and difficulty matching ads with content in the decision to change Grouper's name and business model.

"It's not a business for us," Grouper founder and co-president Josh Felser said of user-generated video. "The content is rarely exclusive and it's hard to monetize. Advertisers don't want their content next to a video of someone jumping off a roof and falling on their head."
