Google Eyes Mobile Dominance

Google is developing a new search service for mobile devices that aims to be a gateway for finding and purchasing mobile content, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

If all goes according to plan, the new system would allow users to search for content, choose from a list of providers and easily purchase the material. In time, Google would be able to charge for sponsored links, bringing its internet business model to the mobile space. But technical delays have thus far kept the internet giant from launching its latest mobile play, according to the WSJ report.

The new Google mobile product also could face opposition from cell phone carriers because Google could enable purchases through PayPal or Checkout. So far, mobile carriers have balked at letting others in on storefronts they have established.
