Publishers Strike Back with Wiki Search

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said he's planning a community-developed search service that will rival Yahoo! and Google.

Late last week Wales' commercial startup, Wikia, acquired Grub, a web crawler that will allow the new search service to find and index websites.

"If we can get good quality search results, I think it will really change the balance of power from the search companies back to the publishers," Wales told Reuters.

The Wikia-produced search service, which will launch near the end of the year, will combine algorithms and human-assisted editing.
