Not long after YouTube announced that it would begin showing ads on some of its more popular videos, fans of the Google-owned firm fought back on the company's blog, bashing the video-sharing site for monetizing its content.
The first comment on the YouTube blog responding to the addition of ads simply said, "yuck."
From there, a virtual firestorm grew, with some users lauding YouTube but many more bashing the site and threatening to leave if ads became more prevalent.
Other users knocked YouTube for its ad placement scheme, chiding the site for "ripping off" VideoEgg.
Many more users simply expressed sadness at what they saw as the commercialization of a community site, with some threatening to take their content and their viewership elsewhere.
YouTube did not respond to an email requesting comment.
