Rumor: Google plans secret GPhone launch

Rumors of a new Google phone, dubbed GPhone, continue to persist with today's news that the company may be planning to launch the phone in as little as two weeks.

On Friday, Rediff.com reported that Google was in talks to launch the phone in India within two weeks, with a simultaneous launch in the U.S. and Europe sometime after that.

Google didn't comment directly on the rumors. In a statement, the company said, "[it] is committed to providing users with access to the world's information, and mobile becomes more important to those efforts every day."

In a CNET Asia blog post, Marguerite Reardon said she didn't believe the rumors that Google was working on a phone, explaining that hardware isn't part of the company's business model.

While Google may not be in the handset business, its mobile mania certainly is in full-swing. Last week, CEO Eric Schmidt said Google would likely bid at the FCC's upcoming wireless spectrum auction.
