Does Google need a doctor?

Google could be in search of a doctor, according to a CNNMoney blog, hypothesizing that the search giant may be looking to acquire WebMD.

If true, the acquisition would give Google a competitive edge against AOL's Health channel in the fast-growing online health sector.

WebMD is widely acknowledged as the leading health destination online.

"Up until a year ago I would have said this rumor would not have made sense because of Google's focus on a home grown approach," Chris Sherman, executive editor of SearchEngineLand.com, told CNN. "But the acquisition of YouTube changed things. Google went after a leader in the video space. So I think it's entirely possible that they could be interested in WebMD since they are one of the leaders in health care."

The rumor comes one day after Adam Bosworth, who helped start Google's health unit, resigned.

In August, Google and rival Microsoft made headlines when both announced that they were looking to offer consumers better online health products. Both companies said they wanted to improve health-related searches and offer consumers access to personal health records online.
