YouTube-killer may have big gun

Hulu, the YouTube-killer created in a joint venture by NBCU and News Corp., may have gotten its first big break, after an initial flap over its name left the site with egg on its face. According to a report from internetnews.com, Hulu is rumored to be in talks to acquire Mojiti, a company that makes technology that would allow users to narrate web videos, ad subtitles in any language and comment with overlaid text and audio.

Hulu spokeswoman Christina Lee declined to comment on what she called "speculation," saying Hulu would make an announcement when the site goes into beta testing in October.

JupiterResearch analyst David Card told internetnews.com that such an acquisition makes sense because it offers Hulu users a distinctly different experience from what people get at YouTube.

"I don't think everybody needs to try to be YouTube," Card said. "That formula is working for YouTube, but it's not necessarily working for anybody else."
