Subscription news at death's door
And then there was one. With today's news that The New York Times has completely abandoned subscription content in favor of ad-supported media by opening the doors of Times Select, the once touted subscription model looks to be coming to an end.
The change, which will be effective tomorrow, will open all content on the paper's site, effectively ending a two-year subscription experiment that had locked off premium content such as columns.
With the news, The Wall Street Journal becomes the only major daily newspaper to charge a fee for online content. However, many expect the WSJ to shift to an ad-supported model now that News Corp. owns The Dow Jones Co., which publishes the paper.
