Confirming one rumor with another rumor is dangerous business. But word that Google is in talks with Verizon to bring its Gphone applications to the No. 2 carrier in the U.S. may go a long way to clearing up the mystery of a wireless device that has achieved more buzz than the iPhone.
For months, rumors have persisted that Google is working on a Gphone, with some speculating that the company would even depart from its core competency and manufacturer a handset. Others have reported that Google planned to work with handset manufacturers on a Gphone. But now a Reuters report suggests that what many have labeled the Gphone is actually a suite of software applications that can be installed on a handset, or in this case, on a carrier's network.
The Reuters story did not cite sources from either company, but an anonymous source identified as being close to the talks called the meetings "useful" and said a deal could likely come soon.
