Tom Anderson may be your friend but unless you're a sleuthing reporter for Newsweek, you may not know the MySpace co-founder's real age. In a recent report, the magazine found that Tom's profile lists him as 33, four years younger than his real age.
News of the lie has created mixed opinions across the web. At TechCrunch, Michael Arrington said the misrepresentation ultimately is a big deal because Tom's has built a youth brand.
"If it was anyone else, no problem," Arrington wrote. "But Tom's profile is added as a friend to every new MySpace user account, along with his fake age and other information. That makes it a bigger deal."
At CNET, Caroline McCarthy observed that lying on MySpace profiles is quite common. She called the news no big deal.
While MySpace users often play with the information on their profiles, that data has become much more important in recent months as the social network has flipped the switch on an advertising program that serves ads based on stated interests and other demographic information posted by users on their profiles.
