NBC.com goes for digital gold

The Beijing Olympics may not draw a huge TV crowd when compared to past games, but NBCU is pushing hard to make the 2008 games a web success story. According to a New York Post story, NBCU is aggressively seeking internet ads to support its 3,600 hours of Olympic coverage.

The internet coverage will run the gamut from popular events like gymnastics and swimming to niche sports like archery.

One beneficiary of the enhanced coverage may be Hulu.com, the recently launched video joint venture from News Corp. and NBCU.

In 2006, NBC found that TV coverage for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy suffered. But web coverage of the games garnered about 300 million pages views. NBC reported that it made about $6 million selling online ads for the Turin games.
