Google Maps to mimic Wikipedia

In a bid to enhance its local advertising options, Google will soon make its legions of followers amateur cartographers. The company launched a wiki-style editor to Google Maps, allowing users to add points of interest and move address markers.

The new program will allow registered Google users to edit local maps, but a moderator will be on hand to keep order.

According to a report in The Seattle Post Intelligencer, Google likely earned about 8 percent of its revenue from local advertising. This new tool is expected to help Google breath more life into the local ad market, which has been slow to embrace the web.
