Facebook quells user revolt

Facebook confirmed reports from yesterday that it will revamp Beacon, its controversial new ad program.

Beacon had come under fire from Facebook users and privacy advocates because of the way it shared the activities of the site's members. While Facebook always maintained that users were free to opt out, many users complained that doing so was quite difficult.

Facebook's new privacy measures will include an opt-out prompt at the time information could be shared, a second warning and a chance to opt out of each Beacon affiliated program. However, according to a report in TechCruch, Facebook still will not offer a global opt out, meaning that users concerned about privacy will need to remain vigilant on a case by case basis.
