MySpace for music?

Rockstar wannabes have been using MySpace for some time to promote their selves. The social networking site took notice, and Tuesday launched a new program called Transmissions. With it, MySpace aims to position itself as a top destination for buying exclusive musical performances.

MySpace is already a popular destination for people seeking music. The site's Music Section drew an average of 17.9 million unique visitors in October, making it the third-most-popular music website behind Yahoo Music (22.4 million) and ArtistDirect (19.1 million). The MySpace site has had a 42 percent increase in traffic from October 2006, more than any comparable site.

Now, with the addition of transmissions, musicians are invited to choose a studio and select the songs they want to perform. MySpace will showcase the recordings and connect users to sites within the network where the content can be purchased. Distributors will set their own prices.

MySpace representatives told the New York Times that the financial terms for each deal would vary.

Last year, MySpace partnered with SNOCAP to provide artists and record labels tools to enable them to sell digital music from their MySpace profile pages, but according to the Times, the program has not been widely adopted.
