Report IDs keys to online ad budget growth

A new report out by ZenithOptimedia predicts continued ad growth for interactive media, as marketers shift ad budgets to embrace online as a necessary marketing vehicle. Projected growth for 2010 is 9.7 percent.

Among the trends:

  • Online video is pulling more TV viewers.
  • More small businesses are embracing online as part of their overall local marketing strategies, boosting the growth of search engine marketing.
  • Social networking will be a significant platform in the establishment of behavioral targeting.
  • Online classified advertising continues to grow with employment and automobile sites such as eBay, Monster, Craigslist and AutoTrader.
  • Online political advertising has begun and candidates are expected to embrace online opportunities more than in years past.
  • Mobile advertising created a lot of buzz in 2007 but will not mature as a medium for several years.

According to the report, the majority of traditional media are struggling to reach new consumers and as a result are losing revenue -- with online reaping the rewards. "We foresee that the internet and other emerging media spending will continue to grow aggressively at the expense of traditional media," states the report.
