New Joost channel dunks on competition

Joost is now a three-sport internet video provider. The internet TV company has inked a deal with the National Basketball Association to show current and past game highlights on an NBA Joost channel.

The NBA joins Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League, which both signed deals with Joost earlier this year.

"By making games, highlights and shows available on Joost, the NBA is ensuring that its fans can enjoy the action where they want, when they want, while simultaneously interacting with other fans from around the world," Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, Joost's executive vice president of content strategy and acquisitions, said in a statement.

Joost has made a point of using live events such as sports, as a way of distinguishing itself from other internet TV providers. The company shed its beta status in early October.

Of the major American team sports, only football remains outside of Joost's reach. However, the NFL has taken a different approach, preferring instead to control and distribute its own content online via NFL.com. This summer, the NFL made waves when it announced a new policy limiting news organizations to 45 seconds of online video per day.
