Welcome to courtship in the digital age. As part of its year-long partnership with Google, 1-800-Flowers.com plans to run a "Will You Marry Me?" contest on YouTube, giving a forum to would-be grooms in their quest to land a bride.
The contest, which is designed to boost the flower company's profile ahead of Valentine's Day, will feature videos of proposals on a special YouTube channel. The winning contestant will receive a wedding at a Sandals Resort, transportation from American Airlines and an engagement ring from Blue Nile. But 1-800-Flowers isn't limiting its reach to couples in the mood for matrimony. Those with cold feet can still get in on the action by posting Valentine's Day messages on the site for the chance to win prizes from the flower company and Victoria's Secret.
"Valentine's Day is a critical season for us, partly just because of the intensity of emotion around the occasion," Monica Woo, president of 1-800-Flowers told The New York Times. "The creative elements we have with this partnership really capture the sentiment and the connection that people have with the season."
