Taking the theme of convergence into its own hands, Google has announced that it has been working with Panasonic to build TV sets that display internet content such as pictures and video. According to a Reuters report, the TV sets will be available sometime this spring.
The sets will allow consumers direct access to Google properties like YouTube and Picasa. However, the deal is said to be non-exclusive.
"Panasonic's cooperation with YouTube and Google's Picasa Web Albums exemplifies our commitment to leading the natural evolution of the internet and extending it to the high-definition television," Panasonic Consumer Electronics company's VP Merwan Mereby said in the statement.
Late last year, rumors surfaced that Google was working on an Android-like operating system for TV sets. That rumor, which remains unconfirmed, may have been an early guess at today's news. But unlike a user-spearheaded change in the form Android, it now seems clear that Google's TV strategy will rely on partnerships with manufacturers.
